Susan comes to Art It Out after a 20+ year career as a novelist and teacher, having taught humanities at the Paideia School in Atlanta, as well as creative writing at Emory University, SCAD, Mercer University, and Berry College. While she has always enjoyed working with children—going back to her early days as a counselor at Frog Hollow Camp in Atlanta—her interest in child development was really sparked by the birth of her own son a little over a decade ago.
Susan uses a child-centered approach when getting to know young people, while also
employing mindfulness and grounding techniques to help kids process and manage their big feelings. She remembers how helpful it was for her to “write it out” when she was overwhelmed as a girl, and is thrilled to now be helping children “art it out.”
Susan holds a BA from Brown University, an MFA in creative writing from Hollins University, and is currently a graduate student in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program at Agnes Scott College.
