We’ve got you covered! Explore our FAQs to learn more about our process, services, and how art can unlock healing and growth.

Getting Started

Start by submitting an intake request through our website. After submitting, you’ll be prompted to schedule a complimentary phone intake call with one of our Client Care Coordinators at your preferred location (Alpharetta, Atlanta, East Cobb, or North Druid Hills).

The phone intake (typically 15–20 minutes) is an initial screening conversation designed to:

  • Learn about your primary concerns
  • Gather general background information
  • Explain our therapy models (individual vs. group)
  • Review scheduling availability
  • Answer logistical questions (fees, location, process)
  • Determine next best steps

This call is not a clinical assessment, but it helps ensure you are connected with the most appropriate therapist and service before scheduling an intake session.

Following the call, we will schedule your formal intake appointment with a therapist.

The intake session with the therapist is a clinical, collaborative first step in the therapeutic process.

During this session, we:

  • Gather detailed background and developmental history
  • Clarify treatment goals
  • Explore strengths and challenges
  • Discuss clinical impressions and recommendations
  • Determine whether Art It Out is the best fit for your family’s needs

Intake sessions may be conducted in person or virtually, depending on clinical appropriateness and family preference.

Please note:
The intake does not automatically guarantee ongoing services. It ensures clinical alignment and appropriateness before beginning treatment.

Individual Therapy:
Typically, parents attend the intake session without the child so concerns can be discussed openly and comprehensively. The therapist will then determine next steps for including the child in future sessions.

Group Therapy:
Your child will participate in a Behavioral Observation with a graduate intern while parents meet separately with the therapist.

If you are unsure what applies to your situation, your confirmation email will clarify expectations.

A Behavioral Observation is part of the group intake process. During this time:

  • One of our graduate interns meets with your child
  • Structured and semi-structured activities are facilitated
  • Social interaction style, flexibility, communication patterns, and regulation skills are observed

This helps us determine appropriate group placement and clinical recommendations, and ensures we are creating thoughtful peer matches.

Observations are reviewed collaboratively by our clinical team before final group recommendations are made.

Group placement is intentional and clinically driven. We consider:

  • Presenting concerns and treatment goals
  • Emotional regulation capacity
  • Social communication style
  • Age and developmental level
  • Peer compatibility
  • Group size and dynamics
  • Readiness for short-term vs. long-term work

Our goal is not simply to “fill a group,” but to ensure each child is placed in a setting where they can feel successful, appropriately challenged, and supported.

When needed, therapists consult with other clinicians to ensure alignment and best fit.

If we determine that a group is not the most supportive option at this time, we will discuss alternative recommendations (e.g., individual therapy first, individual therapy with a graduate intern in tandem with group therapy, parent support, etc.).

After your intake session:

  1. Clinical Review:
The therapist finalizes recommendations and consults internally if needed.
  2. Service Recommendation:
You will receive an email with clear communication and next steps around the recommendation discussed during the intake session for:
    • Individual therapy
    • Group therapy
    • Summer group
    • Combination approach
    • Or referral if more appropriate
  3. Paperwork & Portal Access:
Any remaining documentation will be completed through our client portal.
  4. Therapy Begins:
Treatment goals are implemented and refined as therapy progresses.

For group participants, you will also receive:

  • Start date confirmation
  • Group expectations
  • Cancellation policies
  • Communication guidelines

All therapy sessions are 50 minutes.

Group therapy often includes a brief parent summary at the end.

Individual therapy may include parent involvement at the beginning or end of sessions, as clinically appropriate.

No. We do not provide formal psychoeducational testing.

If we believe an evaluation would be beneficial, we will provide referrals to trusted specialists who conduct comprehensive assessments.

Our Approach to Therapy

At Art It Out, we use art within evidence-based approaches like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Play Therapy, ERP, and DBT.

Art helps children and teens:

  • Express emotions that are hard to verbalize
  • Understand connections between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors
  • Build coping tools in tangible, memorable ways

No artistic experience is required—just a willingness to engage. We also intentionally tailor art activities to each child’s interests and comfort level, ensuring that every participant feels supported and confident in the creative process.

We integrate:

  • Art Therapy
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • Exposure & Response Prevention (ERP)
  • Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)
  • Play Therapy

Treatment is individualized based on each client’s needs and goals.

We support children, teens, adults, and parents navigating:

  • Anxiety
  • Emotional regulation
  • Social skills
  • Confidence and self-esteem
  • Flexible thinking
  • Life transitions
  • Peer challenges
  • Grief and loss
  • Stress management

If you’re unsure, our intake call helps determine fit.

Consistent sessions create stability, build trust, and reinforce skill development. Progress happens most effectively when therapy is regular and predictable. For individual therapy, we typically recommend beginning with weekly sessions to build rapport, thoroughly assess needs, and establish therapeutic momentum before considering any adjustments to frequency.

  • Avoid session caps or required diagnoses
  • Offer greater privacy and flexibility

Families may choose whether or not to submit superbills for reimbursement.

No. As an out-of-network practice, we do not enter into single case agreements with insurance providers. Families are welcome to submit superbills directly to their insurance company for potential out-of-network reimbursement.

Individual, Group & Camp Services

Individual Therapy

We require consent from both parents before beginning treatment. We aim to include and communicate with both parents so everyone stays informed and aligned in supporting the child’s goals.

No. We do not participate in legal proceedings or provide forensic services. Protecting your child’s therapeutic relationship and confidentiality is our priority.

Group Therapy

New clients begin with an intake. Current clients can speak with their therapist about group options. Groups are semester-based and limited in size to maintain quality and cohesion.

Groups open at the start of each semester and close once full (typically 6 members). Members commit to the semester.

Groups meet weekly for 50 minutes throughout the semester.
Elementary groups include a brief parent summary. Adolescent summaries are typically emailed.

Members may miss up to 2 groups per semester. Additional absences with 48-hour notice incur a $50 fee. Without 48-hour notice, the full session fee is charged.

Because groups are small and reserved, consistent attendance supports all members.

cancellations.

If 48-hour notice is not provided, the full $85 fee will be charged for the missed group.

Art It Out believes that keeping the group small gives each group the focus that is needed to achieve individual goals & group cohesion. When you join a group at Art It Out, you are committing to a slot in that group. Sporadic attendance, late cancelations, & no-shows negative affect your child as well as other group members’ experience. Should you need to cancel your appointment, please email your therapist. You must give a 48-hour notice to avoid being charged for your missed group session.

Summer Camp
  • Full-day camp: $950
  • Half-day camp: $500

A $100 non-refundable deposit holds your child’s spot. The remaining balance is due on the first day of camp.

Most camps include 6 children, led by a master’s-level therapist and a graduate intern to maintain a low therapist-to-child ratio.

Superbills are sent on the 5th of the month following camp. Camp is billed as therapy. If you need a separate invoice labeled “camp,” please contact our office.

Intern Services

Our interns are master’s-level counseling students completing advanced clinical training. They receive weekly supervision from licensed therapists and additional supervision through their graduate programs.

Most insurance companies do not reimburse for intern services, but we encourage you to confirm with your provider.

Interns work with many of the same concerns as licensed therapists. Our team will help determine if intern services are clinically appropriate for your child.
